I’m so excited to talk about the new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie!

This review doesn’t contain any spoilers!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the title of a magical creatures encyclopedia that Hogwarts students read in class. This movie is about the author of that book, magizoologist Newt Scamander.*

Our new wizard protagonist Newt Scamander travels around the world saving and researching magical creatures. In this movie he travels to New York during the 1920’s and accidentally releases some of his creatures into the Muggle part of the city. This is a big deal because there are Muggle protesters that suspect there are witches and wizards living among them, and wish to bring back the Salem witch hunts. At the same time, a mysterious magical force has been attacking Muggles in New York and the Magical Congress of the United States has its eyes on Newt’s creatures.

* I think most Potter fans know this, but I’ll clarify something just to make sure: This movie is not about Harry Potter, is not about Hogwarts, is not even about teenage wizards going to school. Fantastic Beast is a Harry Potter spin-off. Which means, it happens in the same universe and you can assume that all your favorite Harry Potter characters exist here, living in another continent and only if they were born before the 1920’s. (Harry was born in 1980).

what_i_liked

  • The new characters: First of all, I loved Newt. He’s a Hufflepuff nerd that looks more comfortable around magical beasts than around people. He’s also really passionate about these creatures and always brings them with him inside his magical suitcase/Tardis (that is definitely bigger on the inside). I also loved Tina and Queenie, sisters and witches that are powerful and kind and added a really interesting perspective on the adult magical life. Finally, my new favorite Muggle (or No-Maj, as Americans would say) is definitely Jacob. He might look like a normal guy whose dream is to open a bakery, but there’s so much more to him. He’s charming and funny, and accurately represents the feelings of the No-Maj audience while watching magic unfold before their eyes.
  • The adult perspective: Even though I love the Harry Potter books, I always felt like they were missing something: adults. Yes, we see them all the time but we are never able to look through their eyes, to get to know life beyond Hogwarts and, personally, I was dying to get a glimpse of the office life for the average magical worker. The four main characters on this movie are adults with a job so, YAY, my dream came true!
  • The American wizarding community: It was also great to get to know the Magical Congress of the United States (MACUSA). American wizards and witches have their own way to do things, including: dealing with bad guys, their own kind of Azkaban, relationships with Muggles, etc. If you look carefully you might notice that the wizarding community resembles the real-life American society from the 1920’s. Even if this movie was not related to Harry Potter at all, I would have found it interesting.
  • It is visually stunning: It is just pretty. From the adorable magical creatures to the way Queenie magically prepares food. It looked magical.

what_i_disliked

  • The divided plot: My only complain about this movie is that it felt like two separate stories going on. We have Newt and his friends chasing magical creatures around New York and the MACUSA looking for the mysterious attacker that is preying on Muggles. I found both stories interesting and I think they complemented each other really well: Newt’s story was fun and charming while the MACUSA chase was darker and scarier. I just wish they were more blended together.

you-should-watch-it-if

  • You love the Harry Potter universe
  • You would watch a movie about adult wizards in New York even if it wasn’t related to Harry Potter
  • You are a Hufflepuff
  • You want to see Grindelwald’s rise to power in the sequels (even if he’s not the protagonist)
  • You want to see adorable magical creatures
  • You want to see adorable Eddie Redmayne

What are your thoughts on this movie? Did you like it? 🙂 Who was your favorite character?? Let me know in the comments!

  • Did you notice that the intro got darker with every movie? The Warner Brothers logo is literally so rusty in The Deathly Hallows that is falling apart!
  • I remember the good old yellow WB logo from Philosopher’s stone.
  • I love Hermione’s bedroom. It looks like the perfect place to relax and read. And she has so many books! #BedroomGoalshermiones-bedroom
  • Hermione is erasing herself from her parents’ memory, that must be the most difficult spell she has cast.
  • I’m literally crying for the second time in the last 5 minutes.
  • (The first time was when I saw the logo at the beginning).
  • Harry saying good-bye to the Dursleys is so awkward. I guess they truly don’t care about Harry at all. I wish they had kept the scene where Dudley tells Harry he is not a waste of space.
  • Poor Dudley was just a spoiled brat.
  • I like how Voldemort tells Snape that he saved him a seat. #BFF #DeathEathersBeforeWitches
  • But what were they talking about before Snape arrived? Were they just chilling and eating canapés with Voldemort?
  • Poor Muggle Studies teacher :(.
  • “Severus, please. We are friends”. That’s the thing about Snape. He’s friends with this woman but will let her die in front of him because he needs to spy on Voldemort. A lot of fans act like he’s a saint but I think his moral ground is as rusty as the WB logo for this movie.
  • Bill is definitely my favorite Weasley. He’s so cool.bill-weasley
  • Also, he’s General Hux from The Force Awakens!
  • Here we go, Harry is letting Hedwig fly…
  • …for the last time :'(.
  • I remember that theory about how Snape knew Hedwig would reveal Harry’s identity if she kept flying by his side, so he DECIDED to kill her in order to protect Harry.
  • It’s a good theory but Snape’s still a douche.
  • Hagrid is truly Harry’s most loyal friend. He would do anything for him. He loves him so much. And he has always been there for Harry.
  • Can you image Hagrid’s face if Harry named one of his children after him??
  • “Harry is the best hope we have, trust him.” This gave me chills!
  • Dumbledore could have said “Help him” too, because, you know…Harry is just seventeen.
  • Ginny has grown so much since that time she went running to her room after seeing Harry.
  • Go get that zipper up, girl ;).
  • Luna Lovegood dancing is my aesthetic. She’s definitely in my Top 5 favorite Harry Potter characters.
  • (Hermione, Luna, Lupin, Hagrid, McGonagall – in no particular order-)
  • Sending messages with a Patronus is really cool. There’s no way that could be intercepted as owls and chimneys.
  • I wonder if one could have a unicorn Patronus. I don’t remember seeing any Patronus in the shape of a magical beast before…
  • Hermione’s bottomless handbag is what I need to travel with all my books – and wardrobe-.
  • I bet that’s a very difficult spell too.
  • Where would Harry be without Hermione? She’s been teleporting them everywhere and even packed clothes and medicine for the three of them.
  • Dolores Umbridge laughing is the most evil thing in this movie. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • Dobby is back in the movies! I hadn’t seen him since Chamber of Secrets.
  • Has he been wearing rejuvenating cream? His face looks so smooth.
  • The trio is taking polyjuice again, another thing that came from CoS.
  • I like how Ron is so worried about ‘his wife’. Is he more empathetic than before?
  • It’s curious that Umbridge’s Patronus is a cat… the same animal as McGonagall’s –which is also her Animagus form-. They couldn’t have more different personalities!
  • Yay, camping time!
  • And more camping…!
  • I know they need to find the horcruxes, but in the meantime they could hide somewhere more comfortable…
  • They could go to a beach in Mexico! I bet Voldemort would never find them there.
  • Hermione saving the day again, coming with the idea of using Gryffindor’s sword to destroy the locket.
  • Ron leaving his friends really bothers me. He is always described as Harry’s most loyal friend, but his jealously always gets in the way.
  • I love the dancing scene between Harry and Hermione, it’s like a male/female bromanceif that actually exists-.
  • …Or maybe the director of the movie actually shipped Harry/Hermione.
  • Which I approve. #Harmony #UntilTheVeryEnd #Always
  • Now Harry is being an insufferable hero again. He doesn’t need to swim under the ice to get the sword RIGHT NOW. Maybe he could alert Hermione first. Because something could go wrong. And if he dies, the rest of the world will have to live under Voldemort’s control. But Harry doesn’t want to bother.
  • Ron is back!
  • And how fun is that Dumbledore predicted that Ron’s temper would get in the way. That’s why he gave him the Deluminator, right?
  • Harry just saw a woman fall apart to reveal a giant snake living under her skin. But he looks more scared of Angry-Hermione looking for her wand.
  • The Lovegood’s house looks so cozy! I wish they had included Luna’s room and paintings.
  • Hey, Xenophilius and I have the same Deathly Hallows necklace!
  • It’s funny how Harry Potter’s most famous symbol came out in the last book/movie.
  • The tale of the three brothers is awesome. It reminds me of Aesop’s Fables.
  • And it’s so beautifully animated!
  • I guess I can’t blame Xeno for betraying Harry. He just wanted his sweet Luna back.
  • He’s still a better person than Snape.
  • Hermione making Harry look like the Hunchback of Notre-Dame was really clever. Her quick-thinking probably saved them from facing Voldemort before having destroyed the horcruxes.  badass-hermione
  • Hermione Granger and How She Defeated Voldemort by Repeatedly Saving the Chosen One.
  • And that way we could get access to those kissing scenes between Hermione and Viktor Krum.
  • -Just saying…-
  • House-elves are incredibly powerful!
  • I would like to know how they ended up as slaves since they can even surpass wizard’s magic.
  • Dobby is so cute. Even if he’s so annoying…
  • He gave me a couple of nightmares when I was a kid because he’s honestly so creepy-looking.
  • He’s a free elf now. :'(
  • *crying for the third time*
  • Voldemort has not respect for personal space. His nose-place is so close to Dumbledore…
  • …Could it be that he never killed Dumbledore because he’s the only person he ever loved?
  • Just kidding –

    • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (both parts) are the only movies from the franchise that I didn’t watch repeatedly to the point of knowing all the lines. It might be because that’s one of my least favorite books in the series. Or because I get so nostalgic while watching Harry Potter movies that I cry the whole time, especially during the first one and last one. So today I decided to watch the movie for the third time. (The first time was in theaters. Second one when the DVD came out). And I wanted to share the experience with other Potterheads :D. What are your thoughts on this movie??
