I’m slowly developing an obsession for bookish subscription boxes. Is there a cure for that?
I’m currently subscribed to Owlcrate, a monthly box that sends a hardcover book and 3-5 goodies, all related to the same theme.
September’s theme was Darkness – Keep reading if you want to see all the spoilers 😀 !
Three Dark Crowns is a YA fantasy novel about three sisters destined to fight against each other to become the rightful queen of Fennbirn. Mirabella, Katharine and Arsinoe are not only heirs to the throne, but each one of them is the possessor of her own kind of magic, which they will use against each other in a fight to the death. Doesn’t that sound extremely bad-ass!? And it certainly goes with the Darkness theme. Value: $17.99 (on Amazon for $10.83)
My favorite item this month was this Celaena’s Cake Candle from The Melting Library. It is an exclusive item created for this box and though I haven’t read the Throne of Glass series (which inspired this scent), I truly loved it! It smells like CAKE. I actually lit it while writing this post and couldn’t stop picturing a delicious piece of cake over my desk. Value: $3.75 for 2 oz (Based on the price for 8oz on TML store)
The next items was a Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children pouch from Out of Print. This pouch is 8″ x 6″. It seems to be another exclusive item since I couldn’t find it on the store. I like that the material is sturdy enough to keep my Kindle inside. I would also use it as a pencil case or 3DS case. (But I wouldn’t recommend it for carrying makeup because the stains would be really difficult to clean). Value: Around $10.00 (Based on a similar, bigger pouch)
Next is a fortune telling bath fizzer from Da Bomb. This berry bomb contains a Yes or No answer about the future (and I’m really scared about it! Am I ready to know if I’ll ever be rich and famous?). I don’t have a bathtub but I guess I could save it for later – or maybe use it during my pedicure at home. Value: $7.50
This one is a bookmark inspired by Six of Crows and designed by Evie Seo. The print is really pretty, as always, thought I would have liked it better if it came with a strip or ribbon attached to it. Value: Around $4 – $6 (Based on the price for art prints on Evie’s store)
The free goodies on this box were really cool. They sent their second collectible pin, a paper fortune teller, a letter from the author of Three Dark Crowns, the postcard/info card with all the explanations and a “passport” with some details about the upcoming fantasy series, Moon Chosen.
I had some doubts about getting September’s box because I hadn’t read two of the books they mentioned in the spoilers (Six of Crows and Throne of Glass), but I’m glad I still got it! The candle and bath fizzer smell delicious and I love getting these pamper-yourself trinkets. I think the pouch adds a lot of value to this box too, but I didn’t like the design that much (at least I wouldn’t pay full price for it – I would have loved it if it featured the book cover instead).
Overall, I liked most of the items and they all have great quality 🙂
The Owlcrate box is $29.99 + shipping.
According to my calculations, the value of the September box was between $36.08 and $45.23 (the big margin is because the book is so much cheaper on Amazon). Apart from that, the box contains the signed bookplate and exclusive designs, so I would say this box was really worth it.
Next month’s theme is:
“Once Upon a Dream”. The next Owlcrate box will be inspired by dreams and Russian folklore!
What do you think about this box? Which one was your favorite item? Mine was the cake candle, of course! 🙂
